Next Stop-Rye Playland, New York

Rye Playland is an interesting old amusement park. It was built in the 20′s and is now run by the county. It’s ownership has gone back and forth, and it’s location make it prime real estate which has many wanting to shut the park down. The latest has ride manufacturer Zamperla buying the park and bringing a lot to it in the same way it did for Luna Park at Coney Island.

Rides such as Derby Racer are pretty rare. This flat ride is one of only two left in the country and reaches speeds of around 25 mph. Considering that it was built before safety regulations, it’s one hell of a ride. It rocks riders back and forth as it spins around a track almost like a carousel.

Speaking of carousels, Playland is home to the Grand Carousel which features hand carved horses and an actual “band” in the music box which consists of two figures striking bells.

One huge feature is of course the Dragon Coaster. The coaster was built in the 20′s and features a tunnel shaped like, you guessed it, a dragon. Riders enter the dragon’s mouth which lights up, with a roar, and exit…through the end.
The park also features a mini flying coaster, an ACE Landmark, Kiddie Coaster (that’s the name folks) as well as a midway of carnival type flat rides.
