The fun keeps coming at Star Wars Celebration, as the first details for the first in many stand alone Star Wars films have been released. Star Wars Rogue One will make its’ debut in December of 2016, and it really hasn’t even started filming yet, but Gareth Edwards is talking about the new film, and dishing out some details on stage at Star Wars Celebration. There are  very few details released, but those in the audience did get a teaser of the new film.

Many Bothans died to bring us this information…

The director of Godzilla and Monsters, Gareth Edwards joined Kathleen Kennedy onstage to talk about the first ever stand alone film. In fact, they made it very clear that it’s not going to be a “spinoff” but a film that exists in the proper canon, in the rest of the Star Wars Saga.

The official title will be “Star Wars Anthology:Rogue One”. Fans in attendance were treated to an early look at a teaser, which is very impressive, seeing that the film hasn’t started filming yet. Pre-production has started, but the only cast member that has been announced is Felicity Jones.

The footage comes up with a lush jungle landscape, possibly Yavin and we hear the voice of Obi Wan from the original film:

“For more than a thousand generations, the Jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire.”

There are bird-like creatures flying over as a tie-fighter scrambles over, and we see a moon…only…that’s no moon. It’s the death star!

The new film will take place in between Episodes 3 and 4, and will tell about the band of rebels who steal the plans for the Death Star. There will be no “Jedi” or “Sith” in this film, and it’s not always clear who’s good or bad…in fact, there really is no good and evil. It’s about a group with no magical powers that comes together to save the galaxy.

Kathleen Kennedy was worried about “opening the floodgates” for stories that are a “dime a dozen”…only this story, which was pitched by Industrial Light and Magic’s  John Knoll, isn’t a dime a dozen story. It takes place in a world we already know, and it fleshes out the details between the end of Episode 3 when we see the birth of Darth Vader, and the beginning of Epsiode 4-when we first meet Luke Skywalker. There’s so much empty time in between, and the story sounds like it could really fill some of that space in, and answer some of the questions that fans have had for a long time.

This was one of the only panels that was not live streamed, so we may not see that trailer online anytime soon.

As for Felicity Jones, she is simply a “rebel soldier”. No other details were given. There is also no exact release date.
We’ll have more when filming officially starts this summer. While Josh Trank has been named as another director for yet another Star Wars Anthology film, no details on his film were given.

Update

A video showing off the new trailer has surfaced. It will more than likely be gone soon. It’s also super low quality, but it gives a great look at the footage.
