Disney just destroyed whatever hopes Universal had on grasping the theme park crown, as they have just announced that Star Wars themed attractions will be coming to both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida. The two lands will be built at the same time, and will bring the world of Star Wars to life. The new areas will feature tons of characters, walk around creatures and the Millennium Falcon!
The first details were released at the Disney Studios Panel, right at the very end of the presentation. The new land will be coming to Disneyland, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The new lands will transport guests to a never-before-seen planet, a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life.
“I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” said Iger. “We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Warsplanet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”

The new lands will be massive, coming in at a huge 14 acres each. This will take up the majority of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Guests will be able to pilot the Millennium Falcon in one of two new signature attractions coming to each land. The other attraction will put guests right in the middle of a climactic battle.
We’ve gotten the full video of the Star Wars Panel, and have gotten a lot more concept art for the new project. It showcases just a few more glimpses of the land, with lots of very rich detail.
A trailer for the new land was released during the Studios Panel at D23, which showed a little more of the details. It included huge walk around characters, including several massive beasts, a Mos Eisley style Cantina Restaurant, and what looked like a battle between rebels (or resistance) and the First Order. It looks like the promise to include the new films in the new attractions is being kept, as the new First Order stormtroopers are definitely looking like they are a part of the new experiences.
Our favorite piece of concept art, if we had to choose, is definitely the Cantina Style Restaurant. Lounge singers, and aliens are everywhere. The richness of the detail that needs to happen will set Disney out of the galaxy if it looks even half this good. Aliens need to be walking around the entire area, and the details need to be something that you keep finding after repeat visits. Hopefully we’ll get a timeline pretty soon, but don’t bet on it. Disney learned a hard lesson with Avatar when they had to push back the dates several times. However, with much of Disney’s Hollywood Studios already under construction, it’s looking like the project is going to happen sooner, rather than later.
