Lefou is Disney’s first openly gay character in new Beauty and the Beast

Ah Lefou and Gaston. Gaston always demanded Belle, but Lefou always seemed to pine for Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. According to U.K.’s Gay Lifestyle Attitude Magazine (click here for the full article), Director Bill Condon says Lefou is coming out and has a scene that leaves no questions about his sexuality.

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” reveals Condon to Attitude.
“He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realising that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Disney has hinted around in the past in other films such as Frozen where Wandering Oaken’s family seems to feature a same sex couple.

Disney channel also aired a recent episode of “Star vs. the Forces of Evil” in which a dame sex couple share a kiss in the background.

However, Lefou will be a first for the studio in a full length feature film. This is a brace move for the studio, but it’s also one that seems to make sense. We’ll have to wait until March 17th to see the moment for ourselves.

The new live action take stars Emma Watson as Belle, Luke McAdams as Gaston and Josh Gad as Lefou. It is easily one of the most anticipated films of 2017.
