11 year old girl dies at Drayton Manor on Splash Canyon ride

Very sad news from the UK, as an 11 year old girl has died after an accident on the Splash Canyon attraction at Drayton Manor. The girl was on a school trip when the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon. Details aren’t completely known at this point, but many news agencies are reporting that the girl was standing up to switch seats with a class mate, when she was tossed from the boat and drug under the water.

Drayton Manor has issued a statement on their official Facebook Page:

The park will be closed on Wednesday, and it is not known if the park will reopen on Thursday. It’s extremely tragic when things like this happen, but unfortunately they do happen. It will be very interesting to see if there was anything that could have been done to prevent this from happening.

While accidents do occur at theme parks occasionally, it is a rarity. Theme parks still remain one of the safest forms of family entertainment in the world. Billions of people visit parks every year, and only a handful of accidents occur.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, and to the staff at Drayton Manor.
