D23 2017: Star Wars booth pays tribute to the past while looking towards the future

Disney is telling a Galaxy of Stories with their huge D23 Booth this year. The booth showcases not only the massive new Star Wars Land, but really focuses on the past of the franchise in the parks. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Star Tours, and it also marks the 40th anniversary of the film. There’s a lot to celebrate, but there’s even more to look forward to.

Take a video tour of the Star Wars D23 Booth below:

Star Wars continues to shape the world, and lives of fans all over the planet. Star Tours was the first step into a larger world for Disney and it brought us right into the thick of battle with an attraction, the likes of which had never been seen before.

Star Tours is represented pretty well here, with a great look at all the different variations of the ride. The most important part is the first. Captain Rex was an unlikely hero that bungled his way through the first day on the job. The ride would build the foundation for what’s happening now, and what’s coming next.

While Star Wars Land hasn’t been opened yet, that hasn’t stopped Disney from introducing new experiences to the parks. A Galaxy Far Far Away, and the Star Wars nightly fireworks, as well as Star Wars Launch Bay have taken Star Wars to the next level…but you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Star Wars Land will open in 2019, and will open at both Disneyland in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. The new area has gotten a very detailed model, which shows a ton of details from the new land. According to the model, the experience that you have will depend on where you come into the land from. There will also be three different entry points. Details are slowly leaking out, but Disney is really taking the new land to the next level in immersive entertainment, as everything you do will have a consequence. If you talk to the wrong person, you could gain the interest of the local Stormtroopers. If you bang up the Millennium Falcon, the boss could send some bounty hunters after you in the local cantina. We’ll get a few more details in the next few days, but we’ll have to wait until 2019 to see everything.

The hardware of the land is also on display. We don’t know where the vehicles and hardware will turn up, but we’re getting a good idea that this new outpost, this Galaxy’s Edge, will be full of a variety of familiar and unique new vehicles and pieces of equipment. Of course, the vehicle is proof that the Rebellion and the Empire are in full swing, but it’s also proof that life has to go on, despite the fight that’s happening.

Another big part of the new area will be the characters that come to life. From First Order officers, to Stormtroopers, they will be a huge part of the new land, as you interact and make your way through the world. As for classic characters, it looks like we’ll get to see some of our favorite creatures make their way into the land. Hammerhead could quite possibly be a walk around character! That’s flat out, amazing. As a fan, that’s what I really want from a Star Wars land. I want to walk into a land that is inhabited by characters and creatures from the movies. I want to feel like I’m a part of something, instead of what Disney has created with lands like Avatar, where you’re not really part of anything…you’re just observing it. Most of all, I don’t want to see huge lines waiting to take pictures with characters…I don’t want to think of them as characters at all, I want to think of them as citizens of this old outpost. That’s just me though, and this is Disney, which attracts millions of visitors every year. We’ll just have to see how it all turns out, but it’s a very exciting time for Star Wars and Disney fans alike.

We’ll have tons more from Disney D23 in the coming days, so stay tuned!
