SDCC: Lucasfilm shines with Star Wars Panel as cast reunites to talk about The Force Awakens

There was to be no new footage of The Force Awakens, but that didn’t stop thousands from filling Hall H at San Diego Comic Con Friday night for the massive Lucasfilm panel, in which Star Wars took center stage. So what was announced, what was the big payoff for those who camped out, and those who waited patiently?

Star Wars director J.J. Abrams walked out with Kathleen Kennedy, and writer Lawrence Kasdan. The movie is in the editing phase now, and Abrams says that there is a cut of the film, but he’s in the fine tuning phase now. The one thing that Abrams positively geeked out about was showing the film to John Williams, who is once again returning to score the film. Mostly everything that was said about the new film was said at Star Wars Celebration, which gave a ton of details.
There was a small reel that showed some new footage, but it was mostly behind the scenes footage. Simon Pegg in costume, Stormtroopers on a lava-like planet, and even one of the new stars in the gunners chair of the Falcon.

Stars scar Isaac, John Boyega, and Daisy Ridley were brought out on stage to talk about filming what could be one of the biggest films of all time.

If that wasn’t enough, the Dark Side was also represented with Adam Driver, Domnhall Gleeson, and Gwendoline Christie. These three will play some of the more…sinister characters in the new film. Gleeson plays General Hux, an Imperial General of sorts. Christie plays the chrome Stormtrooper, and the first visually female trooper from the series. There may have been female troopers before, but we never got the chance to see them.
Of course, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford were also brought out on stage. The fans went positively crazy seeing the three on stage together again. This was Fords’ first public appearance since his plane crash, the guy is absolutely a serious badass. The three loved being back together, especially Ford.
“It should’ve felt ridiculous. I will tell you that it felt GREAT.” The actor got choked up when talking about the original film saying “The original Star Wars was the beginning of my working life.”

While there were no major surprises, or spoilers, JJ Abrams did surprise the entire crowd with a free concert, conducted by none other than John Williams.

The next big reveals should come at the D23 Expo, then a new trailer will hit later this fall. We’ll also be waiting with baited breath to see what will finally happen with Star Wars Land at the Disney Parks.
