National Donut Day: Awesome pants, big fritters, and weird recipes with Voodoo Doughnuts founders

Happy National Doughnut Day! There are few things in the world that can be as great and as fun as Doughnuts. They’ve been around a long time, and everyone has their own prefer on the type of Doughnuts they like. Personally, I’m an apple fritter guy, but there’s something out there for just everyone.

Then there’s Voodoo Doughnuts, famously started by Tres Shannon and Cat Daddy in Oregon. The duo knew nothing about donuts, except that they loved them, and they opened up their first shop. It was clear that they did something right, as the little shop still gets lines around the corner, even today.

We had the chance to talk to the duo at the grand opening of Voodoo Doughnuts at Universal Orlando CityWalk, back in early May.

Video-Chat with the founders of Voodoo Doughnuts

As I said before, I’m an apple fritter guy, and these guys deliver on a massive and rich apple fritter. It’s seriously about the size of my head, which if you’ve met me…then you know just how big that is. The duo truly love their craft, and love bringing style to the mix, as you can tell in the video, with the wild Donut pants and amazing jacket.

The menu often changes, and brings unique and different flavors to the menu. From Butterfingers, to cereal (Oh Capn my Capn), and even a donut that looks like it was dipped in grape Kool-Aid, these aren’t your typical flavors. Of course, there are the normal glazed and sprinkle donuts, which are great, but also takes a massive departure.

The menu at one of the other locations once featured a raw oyster donut…let that sink in for a minute. They were somewhat popular, but involved someone running down to the local raw bar, shucking an oyster and running back. Kind of a pain. There’s been spicy doughnuts, tang donuts…even some “adult” themed doughnuts. The flavors are as various as the location, and changes with the location.

There are eight Voodoo Doughnut locations around the country, with more coming soon. Of course, our favorite is at Universal Orlando, which is now open.
