New details have been released about the long in development, and still untitled Cirque Du Soleil Show at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World. The previous show, La Nouba, closed in 2017 and has been teased for quite some time. At the Parks and Resorts Panel at D23, we finally got a bit more information, and more importantly, an opening date.
For the first time, Walt Disney Imagineering is working in conjunction with Walt Disney Animation and Cirque Du Soleil for a new project that will “draw” inspiration from classic Disney animated films for a brand new show.
Daniel Lamarre, President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, stated “We have joined forces with Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios to create a show that combines Disney animation and heart with the unique artistry and theatrical sensibility of Cirque du Soleil. We are honored to be the first company trusted to work and create around these classic Disney characters in this unique way.’’
“For more than 60 years, we’ve been bringing Disney stories and characters to life in our theme parks around the world,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “Now our teams at Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios have joined with Cirque du Soleil to create an entirely new experience that will wow Walt Disney World guests and bring timeless, enchanting Disney stories to life in an unforgettable new way.”
One of the most interesting things about the show is that it will not only use brand new animation that is being created for the show, but the animation has a purpose beyond actually being entertaining. The characters on stage will interact in new ways with animated characters. Even more, the performers will interact with animated set pieces in ways that have never been done before.
The team from Cirque and the Disney animators worked together to not only come up with a new story, but to also understand how the other worked to get a better idea of how to properly convey the art and performances together.
And if you’re familiar with the Cirque Du Soleil shows, and with Disney animation, you’ll know that music is a huge part of the performance. Cirque Composers came up with an original composition for the story that integrates Disney movie themes.
The story revolves around a little girl, for who the Disney character a central part of her life. Her father, being a Disney animator, sends her on a journey of self discovery through Disney animation. She encounters different characters and of course Disney animated characters along way.
Tickets for the new show are available now, and begins production on March 20th, 2020. The grand opening of the show will be on April 17th, 2020. Tickets are now on sale, and you can get yours by clicking here!
