Universal Orlando is well known for how they incorporate interactivity into their annual Halloween event, Halloween Horror Nights. Universal Orlando started incorporating interactivity into the event back in 2005 with the Halloween Horror Nights website. Within the website, clues were embedded in the story line for fans to piece together. Sometimes clues were messages, like to meet at a specific place on a specific date at a specific time during Halloween Horror Nights. The response was impressive and has grown over the years.
In 2008, Legendary Truth: The Collective was created. The mission behind the Legendary Truth was to investigate the surroundings and happenings in regards to the Dr. Agana disappearance and the mysterious circumstances around herself and her patients.
In 2012, a new game was born: Horror Unearthed. Horror Unearthed brought a new level of interactivity to the table. Through the use of RFID technology, players could sign up online and then link an RFID card to their online account and scan their card to unlock achievements and earn points.
Legendary Truth has returned for 2013 and it takes a lot of the “best” from Horror Unearthed and has been combined with some of the past of the Legendary Truth to bring this year’s online experience to life. We had the opportunity to interview T.J. Mannarino, one of the Creative Directors of Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights on this year’s Legendary Truth experience:
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Sign up: The first thing you need to do to participate is sign up. You can either sign up online at official Legendary Truth website or you can sign up at Universal Studios during select hours on Halloween Horror Nights event nights (see Pass Card Registration for more information)
Choose your Legion: Once you’re signed up, you will be prompted to choose your Legion. Note that you cannot change your mind later without creating your account so make your decision a good one!
Pass Card Registration: During select hours of Halloween Horror Nights event nights, you can visit the Strollers area located near the exit of Universal Studios Florida to register for an account and to pick up an RFID card that will track your in-park play online.
There are two different types of RFID cards you can pick up this year
The free RFID card:
This RFID card is completely free, so if you don’t want to pay for a card or you don’t plan to play but for a few nights, this might be an option for you. It’s a sticker that they will stick to the back of your Halloween Horror Nights ticket that works the same was as the souvenir RFID cards.
The Souvenir RFID Cards:
These RFID cards (pictured above, front and back) aren’t free, however, they make a great souvenir and are much more durable than the free RFID stickers. These cost $5.99 per card (comes to $6.30 after tax). They are made of hard plastic and function the same way as the RFID stickers. They also come with a hole pre-punched at the top of the card, which makes it great to put on a lanyard or keychain to have quick and easy access to it.
These cards are already extremely popular with Legendary Truth participants. We were told during the first two nights of the event, they ran out of cards three times.
Scanning your card: Once you have your card, you’re ready for in-park play! There will be scanners hidden through out the park that you will need to find. There is a scanner at the end of each house that you will need to scan on your way out. When you visit a house for the first time, you will receive a badge of visiting, and if you visit all 8 houses in a single night, you will receive an “8 in 1” badge. See what the house scanners look like below.
Hidden scanner locations:
- Start Scanner – Strollers near the exit of Universal Studios (scanner active from 6pm – 10pm)
- Twister – Located just past Twister in the window (scanner only active during certain time periods)
- Terminator – Near the entrance to Terminator on the windows (scanner only active during certain time periods)
- Fisherman – Located across from the Fisherman’s Wharf in the window (scanner only active during certain time periods)
Point Values:
- 25 points per house
- 100 points per house on Fridays/Saturdays

THE WEBSITE: EXPLAINED
There are many different elements to the Legendary Truth website. We’ll briefly touch on each important section you will need to participate in game play.
Profile:
The profile page displays information about the user logged in. It displays your legion, badges the user has earned, how many points the user has earned, and your name.
Leaderboard:
The first thing you see when you click Leaderboard is the overall view of points. You can look and see how well each Legion is doing in comparison to the others here.
The overall leaderboard shows everyone’s scores in order from most to least. Users from all legions will be lumped into the Overall board, so you can view other players’ scores and profiles from here.
Each Legion has it’s own separate leaderboard. On each leaderboard, you can check and see how well each user is doing and what badges they have. From this page, you can also view other users’ profiles.
Badges:
Badges are a way to show others what you’ve accomplished. We’ll have a full list of badges coming shortly.

Level 1 S W
It appears that this level is currently open to CRO’s. There is a book for each legion on the table that look very similar to the books used in a task last year where you got to “meet the Masters”. This level will more than likely involve a task tomorrow night that involves legion-specific collaboration.
On 10/17/13, Legions are to meet at Bruce the Shark (hanging behind Al Cataraz near Disaster) at their appropriate times. During their meet, they should interrogate and photograph “Captain Lazy Bastard” and then share the photo the official Legendary Truth Facebook page and receive 100 likes. Times are as follows:
Baccanoid – 9-9:15
Kerezan – 9:15-9:30
Maschorian – 9:30-9:45
Cerebrin – 9:45-10:00
Morphan – 10-10:15
Strengoit – 10:15-10:30 (book says 21:15-22:30, but I think it’s mistaken)
If you haven’t joined your legion facebook group yet, now is a good time to do so.

Sublevel 1 S W
Sublevel 1 S W is now open as of 10/10/13. Upon click this screen, a lock shows up.
On 10/13/13, an in-park task was held and when it was completed that player would receive an email with a 4-digit code. That 4 digit code would unlock the gate and reveal some information. However, if you’ve activated a card to play in park, you can input the code, but you won’t be able to look at the information. Online-only players are the only one that could access the information.
Badges awarded for this task was the CRO Origins and CFO Origins.

7531-Baccanoid
4139-Cerebin
1928-Kerezan
