It has been known for quite some time that Twister’s days were numbered. But in a surprise announcement made tonight on live TV. We now officially know when Twister is closing and what is replacing it. Introducing ‘Jimmy Fallon Race Through New York’. A brand new 3D (4D?) experience that will open in 2017 in the former location of Twister… Ride It.
While not much is known about the ride itself, Fallon did hint that it was similar to Harry Potter (Forbidden Journey). Could we see the Kuka Arm ride system used at both parks? Currently Spider-Man and Transformers share identical ride systems which certainly does not rule out the possibility of a Kuka arm based 3D attraction at the Studios park. It was also mentioned that the ride would feature smells and water effects. Other rumors suggest this will be motion based attraction similar to “Europe in the Air” and “Soarin’ Over California”. Soon, you will get the full Tonight Show experience as you make your way to the fabled Studio 6B for a very special taping in which Jimmy challenges his studio audience to the ultimate race through the greatest city on earth.
You’ll rocket through the streets—and skies—of New York City, from the deepest subway tunnels to the tallest skyscrapers, encountering colorful characters, famous landmarks and anything else that comes to Jimmy’s mind—and “that is some weird, wild stuff,” to quote an iconic previous host.
Universal also announced that Twister…Ride It Out will close on November 2. This isn’t the first time Jimmy Fallon has been featured at Universal parks. He’s currently the host of the popular Studio Tour attraction and Universal Studios Hollywood.
If you’re a little confused about the reasoning, Jimmy Fallon has had a huge presence at Universal Orlando since he took over the Tonight Show. In 2014 he spent a week at the resort with live tapings, and even gave audiences a sneak peek at Diagon Alley. The new attraction will bring another New York themed ride to the New York area, making it more complete. The Mummy is housed in a New York museum, which happens to hold a filming location.
It looks like 2017 will be a huge year for Universal with a new hotel and waterpark opening as well as both Fast and Furious: Supercharged and now Race Through New York. We can’t wait to see what Universal Creative imagines with this very unique concept.
