SeaWorld Orlando welcomed a brand new addition to the park, in the form of a big ball of wrinkles and a fuzzy mustache. That’s right, it’s a brand new baby walrus! The little bundle of cute was born in the park on June 3rd.
The baby was a first for SeaWorld Orlando, and the first for the 14 year old walrus, Kaboodle.
Walrus calves are born with whiskers, which help them find shellfish on the ocean floor. Mom and baby are spending tons of time together, and will soon be inspiring guests to learn more about the animals. Walrus populations have stabilized since 19th century commercial hunting was outlawed, but still face habitat challenges from warming temperatures and a thinning ice pack. SeaWorld Orlando has cared for orphaned walrus calves with the permission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the SeaWorld Busch Gardens Conservation Fund has provided research assistance on the Pacific walrus and the impact of dwindling floating sea ice.
Currently, mom and baby are not on display, and are getting rest and care behind the scenes with the SeaWorld animal care staff.
