San Antonio Zoo Celebrates “The Great (Little) Train Robbery” 50th Anniversary with a Fundraiser

San Antonio Zoo will celebrate the 50th anniversary of “The Great (Little) Train Robbery” on Saturday, July 18th, 2020, exactly 50 years to the day. Each Zoo Eagle Train ride that Saturday will host a re-enactment of the event that took place 50 years ago on July 18th, 1970, when passengers aboard the Brackenridge Eagle winded through the park and into history when the miniature train was looted at gunpoint by two masked robbers. what happened that Saturday in July became known as “the Great (Little) Train Robbery.” The crime marked itself in regional and state history as the first time in 47 years that a train had been robbed in the Wild West and the last known train robbery in the state.

The train “robbery” re-enactments will act as a fundraiser for the Zoo Eagle Train.

“Everyone that lived in San Antonio in 1970 remembers the Eagle Train robbery,” said Tim Morrow, President & CEO San Antonio Zoo. “We are excited to have some fun with the history, this unique one of a kind fundraiser is an opportunity to raise funds for much needed new miniature trains.”

Each trip around the park will showcase zoo actor educators in full costume, holding up the Zoo Eagle Train passengers with bubble guns asking passengers for their donations. Audio playing overhead on the train will tell the story of what happened 50 years ago.
