Avengers: Endgame dethrones Avatar as king of the worldwide box office

Avengers Endgame is officially the king of the box office, as it surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar with an estimated $2.790 billion at the box office. Avatar held onto the title of the box office champ for almost ten years. The film also took over seven months to gain that title. Avengers: Endgame did it in less than three. While ten years have passed, the impact of Avengers is a big one, as Marvel moves on to phase 4 of their Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Meanwhile, Avatar will continue it’s story with four Avatar sequels, beginning with Avatar 2 in 2021. While story details are tight on the sequels, it’s going to pick up with the main characters a few years after the original, and continue the fight on Pandora. Will it have enough to fight back to the top of the box office? Without the novelty of being the first HD 3D movie, and having the main characters done with motion capture, it’s not likely, but we will have to see.

Update
James Cameron added his congratulations to Marvel for their milestone.

The picture looks amazing, and showcases Iron Man on Pandora.

Avengers: Endgame currently sits on the number 2 spot on the domestic box office. Number 1 belongs to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was the highly anticipated continuation of The Skywalker Saga. The final piece in the final trilogy of the Skywalker Saga ends this Christmas with Star Wars: Rise of the Skywalker.

Meanwhile, Marvel Phase 4 will kick off in 2020 with The Eternals on November 6th.
