Dynamic Attractions unveiled a new concept that could be a major “game” changer for the industry, with the “Duel Power Coaster” system. The new system will be the first coaster in existence that will be capable of doing spin outs, drifting, and other racing moves with a very unique motion base system, on top of a coaster track.
The concept was revealed today at IAAPA, and if you skip ahead to the 4:28 mark, you’ll hear something that could be very telling on where the the new coaster could go.
Did you catch it? It definitely sounds like a bit of gaming music, and that’s definitely a coin sound from Sonic the Hedgehog. Could be a generic coin sound, but we’re pretty sure about it…anyway, moving on.
The coaster moves along a track, but the ride vehicle is mounted on a motion platform. These motion platforms enable each vehicle to pitch forward, roll side-to-side, change heading, and heave up and down while moving along the track, making for a very unique ride experience.
“The Dual Power Coaster the world’s most advanced roller coaster vehicle,” states Hao Wang, President, Dynamic Attractions. “Most coasters are all about the track. That is only half of the excitement in this ride, where the cart itself is powered and moves, creating racing sensations never possible before on a roller coaster. Theme parks are eager for the next centerpiece attraction because it draws guests,” adds Wang. “The Dual Power Coaster offers a dramatically new sensory experience. It will be a game-changer for creative teams, park owners and guests.”
Automatically, I think of the concepts we’ve seen for the Donkey Kong coaster from Universal, where a robo arm pushes a coaster train along a track. This concept could be used for a gaming Kart ride, or even a car ride where the cars are racing and drifting. The potential seems limitless, and it also seems like these new coaster all but confirm a Mario Kart type of attraction. Now, we’re not saying it IS a Mario Kart attraction (or at least not THE Mario Kart attraction) that we’ll see at Universal Orlando, but it definitely could be applied to an attraction like that.
We can’t wait to see where these first coasters end up, and just what kind of crazy ride it’ll end up being.
